The Gridley church began in 1864 with a revival held by Reverend J.H. Mayfield, which saw over 80 conversions. Reverend Phillip Boulware served as the first regular pastor, holding services in a tent until a church building could be constructed. In 1865, 40 acres of land were donated to the church by John Hurlburt and three others. This land was later subdivided and sold over the years to help support the church’s work.
In 1874, the first official church building was constructed under the leadership of Reverend J. L. Field. This structure, known as the Upper Live Oak Church, was the first house of worship in Gridley. The church entertained the annual conference three times: in 1872, 1892, and 1926.
Over the years, the church experienced significant events, including a fire in 1924 that destroyed the original building. Following the fire, services were held in various temporary locations, including a school and a hall, until a new church building was completed in June 1925. This new church is now the Grace Lutheran Church.
A new era began in 1950 when the congregation, led by Reverend Everett Johnson, moved into its current building on the corner of Haskell and Wilson Streets. The dedication of this new church was held on September 17, 1950. The church has had many dedicated pastors and members over its long history, and a list of ministers serving from 1951 to 1988 is available in the historical records.
The church’s history is a testament to the community’s enduring faith and commitment, with many families and individuals contributing to its longevity and success.
